Alright, I am so sorry that we haven't been posting regularly. Things have been so hectic and busy, but we have been truly blessed this year. I have been getting emails from everyone wanting to know the whole story behind Devonney's birth and the situation on why she was born five weeks early. I have wanted to post it for a while, but it is emotionally very exhausting to sit and think about what to say or how to say it, at least for my sleep deprived mind. So I am going to make an attempt to tell the story the best I can. All that I know is that we are a truly blessed family. We have felt the tender mercies that have poured out on our little family and have seen the Lord's hand in everything that happened with our little Christmas Miracle and her birth.
As most of you know through out most of this pregnancy Adam was unemployed. I did have Dr. appts with the pregnancy but some were few and far between because of the unemployment and then with all of the moving. I was very lucky though. Before we had become pregnant I had lost a lot of weight, my diabetes was completely under control with no insulin and I was feeling great. The Dr. appts that I did have proved to be the same. No problems, very healthy baby. My blood pressure was always 106/73, it never varied. I felt very blessed to feel so good and be so healthy especially because we did not have insurance and with my other pregnancies I was on so much insulin and a lot heavier which required more Dr. intervention.
After we moved here we had to wait a month for our insurance to kick in with Adam's new job. Luckily, after a month I went to the Dr. and everything was fine. Blood pressure still 106/73 baby fine, mommy fine. Around Thanksgiving time I started to notice that I was retaining a lot of water. I felt really tired, really pregnant and really bloated. Of course that is normal in the last little bit of pregnancy, so I didn't really think anything of it. I went in for a Dr. appt after Thanksgiving and my blood pressure was at 160/93. I was immediately shocked. I have never had high blood pressure. I had also gained 11 pounds in two weeks. I could not believe it. I mean I knew that we had just had Thanksgiving, but come on, I didn't eat the whole dang turkey. I have also been so careful during this pregancy with what I eat so that I only had to take a minimal amount of insulin.
The Dr. immediately suspected that I was pre-eclamptic and scheduled a 24 hour urine test and gave me my first steroid shot to make sure the baby's lungs would be developed since he was sure that I would have to deliver early. I had to come in the next day and get another shot of steroids, they checked my blood pressure again. it was still very high. That night I couldn't feel the baby moving so Adam and I took a trip to the emergency room. The kept me there for most of the night. The baby was acting very sluggish, but they figured it was from the steroids. They sent me home with strict instructions to monitor her movement and come in as soon as something goes wrong.
My Dr. wanted to try and keep her in the womb for another two weeks if she and I could handle it. We live in a very small town and if she was born to early or with problems she would have to be flighted to Loma Linda, a hospital two hours away. I had biophysical profiles done daily on her. She seemed to be doing fine, I on the other hand was not handling it so well. My blood pressure was continually rising and I had severe protein in my kidney's and liver. I was put on strict bedrest for a week with the intention of then going to the hospital for the next week and then they would take her. Unfortunately my body decided otherwise. I was on bed rest for a week. Thankfully our ward came to our rescue. They took my kids to school and picked them up. Someone took Cecely for most of the day. It was such a huge blessing for us. We have not been in this ward for very long, but every came to our aid and did such a fantatic job with our kids. I was trying not to stress out, but it was very hard.
I started to have severe heart palpitations and would wake up in the night feeling like I was having an anxiety attack. My heart would be pounding out of my chest. My blood pressure was on the rise and my Dr. decided it was too dangerous to keep her in there in longer. The night before my c-section my whole family got the stomach flu. Cecely was puking, Adam was puking and I was puking. I did not care though, I was bound and determined to have this baby. I had this feeling that she needed to be here, and that it was very important that she come as quickly as possible. We got to the hospital and started the prepping. When I got on the table for the c-section my blood pressure was 200/120. They were afraid that I was going to stroke out or have a seizure. They kept talking to me and asking me if my tongue felt numb or if I was dizzy or tired. Adam came in after the prepping and was informed of my blood pressure and the situation. He remained very calm during the whole process. I know it was hard though. The c-section took a lot longer than expected. I was on the table for two and a half hours. I had so much scar tissue, I also had some acreta, and the placenta was falling apart around my baby.
Devonney Sophia came into the world weighing a whopping 4 pounds 5 oz. She was so tiny. Only 17 inches long. The beautiful thing is that she is as healthy as a horse. She was breathing right away. She passed all her tests with flying colors. This little tiny baby who came into the world five weeks early got to come home with me three days later. She is our Christmas miracle.
I know that there are so many things that could have gone wrong. I could have died, my baby could have died. However the Lord was with our family every step of the way. I felt comforted the whole time I was on the operating table. I knew my husband had given me a blessing and that what the Lord wanted to happen would happen. I was not scared, I felt an overwhelming since of calm. I thank my Heavenly Father everyday for letting me be here to enjoy all of my children.
Devonney will be the last child that I have from my body. My dr. said that I would be putting my life on the line and any other babies we would choose to have,if I got pregnant again. My poor body can't handle another pregancy. So, I had my tubes tied right there after the c-section. I feel very good about that decision, however I do feel a little sad that I won't be pregnant again. I almost want to go back and savor and enjoy every moment I was pregnant with Devonney again.
Does this mean we are done with our family? I am not sure. We could always adopt again. One of our biggest blessings came from adoption. All I know right now is I enjoy each day I have with my children. I enjoy my brand new daughter. All almost five pounds of her. I thank my Heavenly Father each day for my blessings. I am so thankful for a husband who uses his Priesthood power with such worthiness. I am so thankful for a ward who has helped us so much this past month. They have gone above and beyond acts of service. I am so thankful for a Savior who lived and died so that we all may have the opportunity to live with our families for eternity.
Merry Christmas to all! I hope that each one of us finds our Christmas miracle this year.
